Potential Grad Students & Postdocs

Graduate (Postgraduate) Students

Canadian Nationals or Permanent Residents

I do not normally consider applications from students who do not meet the minimum criteria for NSERC or Ontario Graduate Scholarships.   If I am not advertising a paid position on this webpage, then I do not have money to support graduate student stipends.  You will have to obtain your stipend from some external source (look here).  (Also look here.)  Please note that this department does not accept self-funded graduate students.

For NSERC scholarship holders, we offer an additional $10,000 per annum to supplement your NSERC award for PhD students, and $7,500 for MSc students.

If you would like to discuss a potential application to work in my lab, please write to me (email is fine) clearing stating:

(1) your academic background including GPA;

(2) your previous research experience;

(3) your current research interests and how they fit with what I do;

(4) when you are hoping to start.

Non-Canadian Nationals or Non-Permanent Residents

I strongly encourage non-Canadian applicants.  However, you must have, or be eligible for, a scholarship that covers the cost of your studies for at least two years in the case of MSc students, or three years in the case of Ph.D. students.

Many countries have schemes to support overseas graduate education.  For example, there are Fulbright Scholarships, Commonwealth Scholarhsips, Canadian Rhodes Scholarhsips (for British citizens), etc.

If you would like to discuss a potential application to work in my lab, please write to me (email is fine) clearly stating:

(1) your academic background including GPA or equivalent;

(2) your previous research experience;

(3) your current research interests and how they fit with what I do

(4) which sources of funding you have (or will) applied for;

(5) when you are hoping to start.

Postdocs

I can usually provide research funds to support your research, provided that your interests are related to my research program.  You will have to provide your own salary via a grant or fellowship.  I have provided a incomplete list of funding sources on the right.  Please contact me if you are interested in pursuing one or more of these options.
